EALL Yoko McClain Lecture Series in Japanese Studies

Yoko McClain

Yoko Matsuoka McClain (1924–2011) came to the University of Oregon in 1952 as a student, earning both her B.A. and M.A. degrees. She later taught Japanese language and literature at UO from 1964 to 1994, publishing widely and lecturing internationally. Her lifelong dedication to Japanese literature and education left a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike.

The Yoko McClain Lecture Series honors her legacy by supporting public talks and seminars that promote understanding of Japanese literature and culture. Funded through the Yoko McClain Endowment, the series brings distinguished scholars from leading institutions to the UO campus to enrich the work of the Japanese Language and Literature program.

Faculty may apply for funds to support speaker invitations and event coordination. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis by the Japan Sector of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL) at UO. This fund stands as a lasting tribute to Yoko McClain’s contributions to the university and the field of Japanese literary studies.

Although CAPS does not manage the fund directly, it can provide support with event management and promotion.
