Center for Asian and Pacific Studies
The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) connects scholars and students through research, events, programs and fundings focused on the Asia-Pacific region.
Overview
The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) at the University of Oregon (UO) was established in 1987 through an act of the Oregon Legislature and has been serving UO faculty and students ever since. In 2012, CAPS transitioned its administrative home from the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation to the Global Studies Institute of the Division of Global Engagement. CAPS is an internationally oriented academic center that advances research, programming, curricular innovation, and outreach related to Asia and the Pacific. It is one of UO’s oldest and most prestigious units dedicated to international scholarship at UO.

Mission
CAPS' mission aims to deepen understanding of the Asia-Pacific region, and its primary aim is to foster collaborative and individual research engaging Asia-interested scholars from UO, the nation, and around the world. The Center is distinctive in terms of its geographic scope, with a programmatic focus on East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Pacific Islands. CAPS has many service-oriented functions, which are showcased in this graphic:
