GSI Affiliates

The American English Institute (AEI), as a unit a of the College of Arts and Science (CAS), serves the educational mission of the University of Oregon through English language instruction, English language professional training, and academic scholarship. The AEI champions the University’s mission of internationalization and is a leader in helping achieve the University’s goals for diversity and student success. The AEI supports the University in the integration of international students into all aspects of campus life, and collaborates with faculty across campus toward creating a successful academic experience for all international students through it’s three programs: the Intensive English Program, the American English for International Students and Innovative Programming.   

The Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) at the University of Oregon puts the study of Latino/a and Latin American communities in conversation with one another and with the state of Oregon. CLLAS is a knowledge center dedicated to public access and excellence through the integration of teaching, research, community engagement, and dissemination. CLLAS is an integral part of the UO’s strategy to recruit, retain, and build alumnae relations with a diverse and energized group of students, faculty, staff, parents, and families and to connect the university locally, nationally, and globally. CLLAS facilitates collaborative research, scholarship, intellectual community, and community outreach focused on Latin America and U.S. Latino/a populations.

The Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) provides technical training, engineering assistance, donated instructional materials, and equipment to network international engineers who develop and maintain the internet infrastructure in their respective countries or regions. By working strategically with universities, industry, internet service providers, regional internet registries, government agencies, and private organizations, the NSRC makes it easier for local scientists, engineers, and educators to collaborate through the internet with their international colleagues and connect communities of interest.

Cinema Pacific is devoted to showcasing and fostering the creativity of international films and new media. From 2010-15, Cinema Pacific presented six annual film festivals devoted to films and new media from Pacific-bordering countries. In late 2015, Cinema Pacific began focusing its energies on organizing year-round public screenings of media art, guest artist presentations, and media art installations at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and overseeing the online and onsite activities of the James Blue Project.

The Rutherford Middle East Initiative is being developed under the College of Arts and Sciences with a grant from Bill Rutherford, a Portland-based investment manager and an alumnus of the University of Oregon. Rutherford’s generous contribution has enabled an extensive effort to create a new minor in Middle East studies at the University. The Rutherford Middle East Initiative is currently in its second year of a three-year gift.
