About us

The goals of University of Oregon Global Welcome and Global English are to provide pathways for full admission to the UO for conditionally admitted students, equip international students with cultural understanding during study abroad or internship programs, and provide a flexible model for English Language Learning.

What is UO Global Welcome?

The University of Oregon Global Welcome is a partnership between the Division of Global Engagement, Office of Admissions, and Lane Community College to provide comprehensive support for UO conditionally admitted students to improve their English proficiency while also experiencing welcome and belonging at the University of Oregon.  Students will have an opportunity to live in UO residence halls to experience full campus life, enroll in a zero-credit UO study skills preparation course, participate in international student orientation, work with an English conversation partner, and engage in place-based experiential learning and language practice. Students will take English learning courses at Lane Community College.  Student F1 visas will be coordinated by the University of Oregon in collaboration with Lane Community College.

What is UO Global English?

UO Global English is designed to give visiting international students an opportunity to experience another culture while exploring practical career options and potential opportunity to pursue further study in US while improving their English language skills. Students will take their English language courses at Lane Community College and engage in place-based experiential learning and language practice through their exchange program, internship, or fellowship program. Some students may choose to focus completely on English language instruction.  Visiting student and scholar J1 visas will be coordinated by the University of Oregon. 

Who are our students?

Our students include conditionally admitted University of Oregon students, exchange and visiting students, and participants in short-term internship and study abroad programs on the beautiful University of Oregon campus. Depending on the program participants may live with a local family through a homestay, in residence halls, or nearby apartments.

Question: What is UO Global Welcome?  Starting in the Fall 2025, UO Global Welcome will provide comprehensive wrap-around support for conditionally admitted University of Oregon students who need additional English language learning instruction to be fully matriculated at the University of Oregon. Students will be UO students and enroll in English language instruction at Lane Community College.

Q: What supports will UO Global Welcome students have?   Students will have an opportunity to live in UO residence halls to experience full campus life, enroll in a zero-credit UO study skills preparation course, participate in international student orientation, work with an English conversation partner, and engage in place-based experiential learning and language practice. Students will take English learning courses at Lane Community College.

Q: What is UO Global English?  Starting in Fall 2025, UO Global English will begin to offer English language instructional program to visiting international participants who are not enrolled as admitted students to the University of Oregon. Students will participate in an exchange program, internship, study abroad, or fellowship program in addition to English language instruction.

Q: What is Lane Community College? Lane Community College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and provides comprehensive, accessible, quality, learning-centered educational opportunities that promote student success. The downtown campus is a 23 minute walk, 13 minute bike ride, or 7 minute free bus ride from the heart of the University of Oregon campus.

Q. What is the Lane Community College English as a Second Language program? The mission of English as a Second Language is to assist non-native speakers, both resident and international students, to achieve educational, workplace or other personal goals by facilitating English language learning and intercultural understanding in a supportive, respectful environment. 

Q: Our students used to take classes at the University of Oregon through the American English Institute. Why is there a change?  The University of Oregon, College of Arts and Sciences is closing its American English Institute (AEI) as of June 2025. UO Global English has worked closely with Lane Community College, AEI, and CASLS to develop a new program designed specifically for low-intermediate and intermediate English language learners.

Q: Will UO Global English continue to work with programs that used to work with AEI?  Yes, definitely. All these partners will have the opportunity to enroll in the new programs offered by UO Global English. 

Q: Will conditionally admitted international exchange students be able to take Global English courses at the University of Oregon?  Yes, students will be able to enroll in UO Global English with or without a homestay with a local family. Universities will use the Exchange and Visiting student nomination process on the UO International Student and Scholar Services website. Q. How do international students apply to the University of Oregon? Students seeking admission to the University of Oregon can find information about the application process on the UO Admissions website. UO Global Welcome is designed for conditionally admitted students who need one or two quarters of English language instruction before they can be fully admitted to the UO.

Q: What will happen to current University of Oregon-matriculated international students enrolled in AEI? Courses will continue in AEI as planned until June 2025, after which the Institute will close. Beginning in September 2025, UO-matriculated international undergraduate and graduate students who need to improve their English language skills will receive instruction through the Yamada Language Center, which is part of the College of Arts and Science’s School of Global Studies and Languages.  

Q: We have a program with AEI that’s not described here. Will you still have a way to teach our students?  Yes, please contact Elly Vandegrift or Dennis Galvan to discuss your program needs. We are excited to work with new and existing partners to develop programs paired with UO Global English.         

Q: Will CASLS still offer the internships and short-term study abroad programs?   Yes, CASLS will still offer the Oregon International Internship Program (OIIP), and the Oregon Experience Program (OEP), and will continue to work with specific partners such as Tamagawa University.  UO Global English will support the English language learning needs of participants in these programs.  

Q: What is the Center for Applied Second Language Study (CASLS)? CASLS is a faculty research center housed in the University of Oregon Division of Global Engagement’s Global Studies Institute. CASLS develops high-quality, research-based language learning curricula and professional development programs for online and in-person audiences. CASLS is one of sixteen National Foreign Language Resource Centers funded by the US Department of Education. These centers work to increase the capacity for language education throughout the United States. For 20 years, CASLS has also hosted an internship program (Oregon International Internship Program) and short-term study abroad programs (Oregon Experience Program) for partner universities and participants in Asia. Each of these programs offers participants the opportunity to learn English through practically oriented experiences.
