Frequently Asked Questions:
Question: What is UO Global English? Starting in Fall 2025, UO Global English will begin to teach a place- and experience-based English instructional program to visiting international participants who are not enrolled as admitted students to the University of Oregon. This program will meld traditional language learning experiences with practical contexts of use both on the University of Oregon campus and in the surrounding areas. The curriculum was developed and is managed by the Center for Applied Second Language Study (CASLS).
Q: What is the Center for Applied Second Language Study (CASLS)?
CASLS is a faculty research center housed in the University of Oregon Division of Global Engagement’s Global Studies Institute. CASLS develops high-quality, research-based language learning curricula and professional development programs for online and in-person audiences. CASLS is one of sixteen National Foreign Language Resource Centers funded by the US Department of Education. These centers work to increase the capacity for language education throughout the United States. For 20 years, CASLS has also hosted an internship program (Oregon International Internship Program) and short-term study abroad programs (Oregon Experience Program) for partner universities and participants in Asia. Each of these programs offers participants the opportunity to learn English through practically oriented experiences.
Q: Our students used to take classes at the University of Oregon through the American English Institute. Why is there a change?
The University of Oregon, College of Arts and Sciences is closing its American English Institute (AEI) as of June 2025. UO Global English has worked closely with AEI and CASLS to develop a new place-based and experiential curriculum designed specifically for low-intermediate and intermediate English language learners.
Q: Will UO Global English continue to work with programs that used to work with AEI?
Yes, definitely. All these partners will have the opportunity to enroll in the new programs offered by UO Global English.
Q: Will conditionally admitted international exchange students be able to take Global English courses at the University of Oregon?
Yes, students will be able to enroll in UO Global English with or without a homestay with a local family. Universities will use the Exchange and Visiting student nomination process on the UO International Student and Scholar Services website. Please contact Becky Crabtree, Director, International Student Services, with additional questions.
Q. How do international students apply to the University of Oregon?
Students seeking admission to the University of Oregon can find information about the application process on the UO Admissions website. UO Global English is designed for conditionally admitted students who need one or two quarters of English language instruction before they can be fully admitted to the UO.
Q: What will happen to current University of Oregon-matriculated international students enrolled in AEI?
Courses will continue in AEI as planned until June 2025, after which the Institute will close. Beginning in September 2025, UO-matriculated international undergraduate and graduate students who need to improve their English language skills will receive instruction through the Yamada Language Center, which is part of the College of Arts and Science’s School of Global Studies and Languages.
Q: We have a program with AEI that’s not described here. Will you still have a way to teach our students?
Yes, please contact Elly Vandegrift or Dennis Galvan to discuss your program needs. We are excited to work with new and existing partners to develop programs paired with UO Global English.
Q: Will CASLS still offer the internships and short-term study abroad programs?
Yes, CASLS will still offer the Oregon International Internship Program (OIIP), and the Oregon Experience Program (OEP), and will continue to work with specific partners such as Tamagawa University. UO Global English will support the English language learning needs of participants in these programs.
