The Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon supports innovative world language teaching through search-based curricula, professional development resources, and assessments that strengthen language education infrastructure and drive innovation. As one of sixteen National Foreign Language Resource Centers, we work to enhance the nation’s capacity for language education by integrating best practices in pedagogy, the latest research in second language acquisition, and technology that’s practical and classroom-ready. We place a strong emphasis on interlanguage pragmatics and the development of social competencies.
CASLS began as a group of Japanese teachers in Oregon working on a three-year grant to support Japanese language instruction. Today, we support all world language teachers and learners.

CASLS offers two main programs for international students that embody its mission to support innovative world language teaching and learning: the Oregon Experience Program (OEP) and the Oregon International Internship Program (OIIP). The OEP immerses students in U.S. academic life while advancing their English language skills and intercultural competence. The OIIP builds on this experience by adding hands-on internships in local K-12 classrooms, allowing students from China, Japan, and Taiwan to deepen their understanding of the U.S. educational system while sharing their cultures. Both programs reflect CASLS’ commitment to meaningful communication, reflective learning, and the transformative power of language as a tool for personal growth and community enrichment.
